Coffee, Caffeine, and Aging
I’m annoying when it comes to my morning coffee. I have to have exactly one cup or else it doesn’t feel like my day has really started. Only one cup though, I’m small and too much coffee makes me jittery. With places like Starbucks pushing coffee drinks like mocha-latte-frappa-coola-chinos, people tend to forget that coffee is actually pretty bomb for you. Besides the whole it wakes me up in the morning thing, coffee and caffeine have some amazing benefits for our bodies and skin, including those in the anti-aging category. Today’s Beauty School lesson is all about how great caffeine is for our skin, plus a breakdown of our Custom Youth Restoring Mask!
A Cup A Day Keeps the Derm Away
Coffee is truly a nectar of the gods. It gives you energy, it’s a diuretic, and it’s got some amazing anti aging properties. The thing is you don’t get the anti aging goodness by drinking it; you have to put it on your skin. Caffeine is a compound found in tea and coffee that stimulates the nervous system, hence why it makes you feel more alert. This is also helpful because it allows for better blood flow.
- When you apply caffeine or even a coffee scrub to your skin, over time it can help reduce cellulite, stretch marks, and acne, even stubborn bacne! Better blood flow also means more collagen, which means tighter, younger looking skin!
- Coffee grounds are a great exfoliator, too, which helps brighten the skin and keep it firm.
- We all know how damaging free radicals can be to the skin. They clog the pores, cause breakouts, and lead to early signs of aging. Caffeine is a super strong antioxidant that helps fight free radicals and reverse signs of aging.
- When it’s applied to the skin, caffeine constricts blood vessels, making the skin appear tighter and less red, if that’s an issue for you! It’s particularly helpful around the delicate eye area, making it a key ingredient in your eye creams of the future, because it depuffs and lightens dark circles too!
- Coffee and caffeine surprisingly have the same pH as our skin, making it a good option for all skin types since it won’t dry you out or grease you up.
I knew I loved coffee for a reason.
Custom Youth Restoring Caffeine Mask
Keeping up with your skin is a consistent process. If you really feel you’re showing signs of aging, why not try something with caffeine in it for an extra boost? Maybe even our very own Custom Youth Restoring Caffeine mask???? It doesn’t hurt to start age prevention early, either! Let’s take a look inside each ingredient to find out why this mask might be the one for you.
Coffee: we love it for a lot more reasons than how delicious it is in the morning. It’s a blood flow stimulator, so it’ll help produce more collagen and make your skin firmer. Coffee also has a ton of antioxidants to fight off free radical damage. We like that it adds an exfoliator to the mask too, making it great for getting rid of dead skin. It won’t try out your skin either, since it’s the same pH. The caffeine antioxidant helps draw excess fluids out of cells, aiding in tightening the skin. Caffeine has also been found to provide UV protection and reverse UV damage.
Coffee Arabica Seed Oil: it’s a powerful oil with a ton of anti-aging benefits. It’s great for improving the skin’s texture and overall appearance. It has a smoothing effect on the skin, making it appear tighter with less obvious signs of aging. Coffee seed oil also helps with moisture retention, which is great since we need more of it as we age! It’s great for stimulating collagen and elastin production, too!
Rosehip: an anti-aging miracle. It’s full of essential fatty acids that help keep the skin deeply hydrated and reduce the appearance of fine lines. It keeps the skin’s texture in check too. Rosehip is antibacterial and anti-inflammatory, so it’ll help stop any breakouts or redness in its tracks. It’s also super high in vitamin C, a natural skin brightener and anti-aging agent. Vitamin C is also super helpful in producing collagen!
Sea buckthorn: sounds like ocean life, but it’s actually a shrub that grows bright orange berries. For your skin, though, it has some pretty cool healing properties. It’s a nutrient powerhouse with 6 essential vitamins, folic acid, over 60 antioxidants, fatty acids, and a ton of minerals. The omega-7 fatty acids found in sea buckthorn help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It’s amazing for skin regeneration!
Maqui fruit: these tiny berries pack a powerful antioxidant punch. The contain 40x more vitamin C than oranges and 4x the amount of antioxidants in strawberries and blackberries. Basically they’re an anti-aging savior. Since they’re so full of antioxidants, they fight off free radicals like their little lives depended on it. Plus, they help to improve circulation, so that’s great news for the collagen deficient! It’s also been found to reduce cell damage.
Honey: a moisturizing miracle, an honest to goodness nectar of the gods. Honey is a magnet for moisture and works to give your skin the highest amount possible. It’s also antibacterial so it’ll fight off any nasty stuff that might be trying to flourish on your face. Honey allows the skin to have better elasticity too. Overall, it’ll leave your skin supple and with a healthy glow.
As far as customizable ingredients, here are a few of our faves.
Hibiscus: a natural skin tightener due to its AHA content. These are great for oilier skin types because they help exfoliate and balance the skin without over drying.
Rice Bran Oil: is deeply hydrating and helps slow down premature aging. It has vitamin E and fatty acids that keep the skin moisturized. It’s also full of antioxidants and enzymes like CoQ10, which protect the skin from outside stressors and help you maintain a glow.
Buttermilk: is great for bringing back a healthy glow and kicking dullness to the curb. It’s full of lactic acid, a powerful probiotic that’s often used to treat hyperpigmentation and age spots.
No matter your age, or what stage of life you’re in, it’s always beneficial to take preventative measures towards signs of aging. But it’s just as beneficial to remember that aging is a natural, unavoidable, and downright beautiful part of life. Of course there are always gonna be ways to try and look forever young. Being comfortable in your skin will never go out of style, though. Oh, and don’t forget your sunscreen!
