Bright, glowy skin is all the rage. It seems like everyone wants that natural glow sans makeup, and with our #GLOWBABYGLOW challenge, you can achieve the glazed donut looks of your dreams. Yesterday we covered the regimen, now let's break down what makes Bollywood so amazing.
Let’s talk charcoal (and all the other stuff in the mask too)!
My love for charcoal based skincare started as a fluke. I’d heard about it’s deep detoxing benefits, but I never thought it would work for me. On a whim, I decided to test out a charcoal cleanser sample I’d gotten while purchasing of one of my favorite masks. After two weeks of using it day and night, a cluster of stubborn acne scars and blackheads cleared up and never came back. I never underestimated or questioned the power of charcoal ever again.
Charcoal is the star ingredient of our Bollywood face mask. Combined with other deep cleaning and soothing ingredients like honey, lavender, red moroccan clay, and green tea, this mask packs a powerful detoxifying punch, while also being super soothing. Here’s a breakdown of all the ingredients and why they keep the skin healthy and clear!
This is the ultimate detox ingredient. Charcoal binds poisons and toxins to flush them out of the body when it’s consumed. It’s great for when you want to do a deep outer body detox as well.
If you want to get rid of deep rooted dirt and oil, charcoal is the ingredient you’re looking for--it's literally a magnet for all the impurities below and on the skin’s surface. It’s been used in Ayurveda for centuries to flush poisons and acts as a great balancer for oily skin. It’s also a highly beneficial and effective treatment for acne.
Honey is a natural antibacterial and helps keep bad bacteria from flourishing on the skin, making it a bomb acne treatment. Raw honey is packed with powerful antioxidants called phenolic compounds, which help protect the body against cell damage. Raw honey has some pretty amazing healing properties for the skin because it’s a strong antibacterial. It has a ton of phytonutrients which protect against inflammation. It also helps slow down signs of aging due to its high antioxidant levels. It’s a great skin soother and moisturizer, and also deeply cleanses the pores. If you wanna try a super hydrating mask with just honey, make sure it’s raw honey!
On its own lavender has wonderful aromatherapeutic benefits of relaxation and promoting good sleep. It’s soothing to damaged skin and aids in reducing inflammation. Lavender is also antibacterial and can kill surface bacteria that cause acne. On top of being super soothing, lavender has antibacterial properties, too. It’s gentle enough to apply to the skin, unlike most essential oils, and can help heal wounds and restore the skin’s complexion. Lavender has powerful antioxidants that protect the skin from free radicals, chemicals, and pollutants, which can cause early signs of aging and can take a major toll on the overall health of the skin.
Red Moroccan Clay
Clay has really great mattifying properties and is often used in masks to reduce the oiliness of the skin’s surface. This clay is specifically good for unblocking the pores, too, which makes the skin feel that much cleaner. You’ve probably seen this listed as rhassoul clay, but this stuff is a blackheads worst enemy. Red Moroccan clay has been used as a beauty treatments for thousands of years and for good reason. It has highly absorbent and exfoliating properties, it’s a staple in natural skin care. It’s been used to even out the complexion, tone the skin, and stop acne in its tracks, especially blackheads. It also helps keep the skin bouncy and elastic because of its high magnesium and silica content. Rhassoul clay is so good for the skin that you can use it in lieu of a traditional skin cleanser and you won’t have to worry about it stripping the skin, either!
Another amazing antibacterial, the coconut oil in this mask helps kill germs and bacteria that cause breakouts. People usually feel that coconut oil clogs the pores, but when it’s used with all the other ingredients of the mask, it acts as another antiseptic and keeps the skin’s surface clean without drying it out. Coconut oil has been referred to as one of the healthiest foods on the planet. It contains a unique type of fatty acid called medium-chain fatty acids, which make coconut oil one of the best fats to put on and in our bodies. Because these acids are smaller in size, they are more easily absorbed, which lets them get to work faster. Coconut oil can help fight skin ailments like eczema and psoriasis because of its anti-inflammatory abilities. It’s also antimicrobial, making bad bacteria disappear from the skin’s surface.
This naturally occurring pesticide is great for getting rid of bad bacteria and clearing up existing pimples. Neem is also a great anti-inflammatory, which can help reduce the appearance of redness on the skin, as well as puffiness and irritation. Neem comes from the Neem tree, which is native to India. The tree adapts well to changing environments and the oil from the leaves has been extracted for medicinal use. It’s a strong antibacterial and antimicrobial which can be used for healing both internal and external ailments. Neem is a great detoxifier and can be used to flush out bad stuff from the liver and kidneys. Neem is an incredible natural treatments for acne, since it is antibacterial and antioxidant, it helps fight the bad bacteria that causes acne, as well as reduce scarring. Neem is also packed with vitamin E, an excellent moisturizer.
Kelp is a group of large sea algae that is commonly referred to as seaweed. It is extraordinarily rich in alkaline buffering nutrients such as sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium. It is also a phenomenal source of chlorophyll to boost blood cell formation and purify the body. Kelp is a great anti-inflammatory that can help those with rosacea and cystic acne. Kelp is also an exfoliator that helps bring out your skin’s natural glow.* It also protects your skin from the sun and free radicals.
Talk about packed with antioxidants! Even just drinking it can flush your body which, as we’ve learned, could be why we break out. It’s also reduces redness and inflammation. Green tea leaves haven’t been fermented, which gives them a super high level of antioxidants. Some of the antioxidant properties in green tea leaves include polyphenols, catechins, and other flavonoids -- these are the properties that make fruits and vegetables so good for you. Green tea adds an intense antioxidant boost to the Bollywood mask.
Bollywood is mixed with some pretty powerful ingredients. The beauty is that all of them are all just as effective on their own as they are together. This mask is perfect for people with acne, oily skin, rosacea, or those who just want a deep clean. Our skin is exposed to some really harsh conditions, and this mask can help alleviate the effects. Also, it’s always nice to give your skin a little TLC.
