It can be easy to let outside forces into your life and let them take control. It can happen without you even realizing it. But the sooner you snap out of it, the sooner you’ll be able to regain that control. Having 100% of the power over your life is something we tend to lose sight of because of stress or work or family or relationships. It’s important to remember that the only person in control of your life and your choices is you! Today’s Beauty School lesson is all about changing your life and mastering your mindset!

How can I change my life?

Humans are habitual creatures. We thrive on being able to do certain things over and over because they make us feel more comfortable. Unfortunately though, we tend to develop habits that aren’t always good for us, mentally and physically. You can change your life and your outlook on it by adopting healthier habits that benefit our minds, bodies, and souls. With focus on your body and what you’re putting into it, you can eventually start to see a difference in your mental and emotional clarity as well. Here are our top 5 habits we’ve adopted for a healthier life!

1. Develop more positive thinking. Life isn’t always sunshine and rainbows. But your attitude when life throws challenges your way determines how you’ll handle it as well as the outcome. Adopting a more positive outlook will give you the motivation to get through all of life’s challenges and hurdles. Start by recognizing when you’re thinking negative thoughts or engaging in negative self-talk and stop it in its tracks. Really focusing on shifting that negativity will make challenges that much easier and rewarding. 

2. Be kind. To yourself and to others. When you’re kind to yourself and to other people, it starts a chain reaction. Others notice it and start engaging the same way. Plus, you feel better as a person. People react better to kindness, too. Even small gestures like smiling at someone, holding open a door, or paying for someone’s coffee, can make a big difference. Just remember that compassion goes a long way. You never really know what someone is going through, so make the effort to be a little nicer everyday. We need more kindness in this world.

3. Sleep sleep sleep! I know there are people who find sleep to be a waste of time (what?!) and would rather be up doing other things. Listen y’all, our bodies and minds need sleep in order to function. Getting 7-8 hours of sleep per night adds years to your life. Listen to you body and give it the rest it needs! It’ll have positive effects on your mood, behavior, and performance. You’d be surprised how much a good night’s sleep can change your attitude!

4. Let go. What’s done is done. Take everything as a lesson and stop letting the hurt hold you back. Also, learn to forgive yourself. Life is hard enough, you don’t need to be hard on yourself too. We’re soft beings at the end of the day, with a lot of emotions. Being able to forgive yourself for mistakes will take a lot of weight off your shoulders.

5. Stop stressing so much! Easier said than done in some cases, but stress takes a much bigger toll on our bodies than we’re led to believe. Just take a step back and breathe. Understand that if you're stressed, it'll pass with time and patience. Do the things you like to do that reduce stress levels. Meditate. Disconnect for a second. Don't let the pressure crush you and I promise you will come out of it unscathed and better equipped to handle it next time. You got this :)

Learn to Master Your Mindset

There’s truth behind the idea that those with a more positive outlook on life tend to be more successful and satisfied with the things they have and even strive for more. People who tend to be more negative have a harder time seeing what they’re being blessed with and, in turn, end up blocking those blessings. Learning to master your mindset is a stepping stone towards growth and a better understanding of what we have to offer. The idea is, there are two kinds of mindsets: a growth mindset, and a fixed mindset. People with a fixed mindset tend to feel that what you see is what you get in terms of what they have to offer. Those with a growth mindset aren’t afraid to challenge themselves and see experiences as an opportunity for growth. Opening your mindset to be more growth oriented will allow you to see the full potential of the skills you already have. Plus, it’ll help you develop new ones that can benefit you down the line. It’s a chance to give your mind room to grow and flourish where you would otherwise be too afraid. The possibilities that come from having a growth based mindset are endless and can lead to more abundance in your life. So, would you rather have a fixed mindset, or a growth mindset?  Here's how you master growth:

  • Stop overthinking. Getting a good grip on your mindset will allow you let go of any fears you may have. Overthinking leads to stress, which could lead to the worst case scenario you’d imagined. Stop being in your head and reassure yourself that everything will work out in the end. Remember, you are what you think!

  • Set your own expectations. Are people’s expectations of you wearing you thin? Worrying about and trying to do what other people expect of you can hold you from reaching your fullest potential. Set your own expectations for yourself and you will be successful no matter what.

  • Know that there’s not a lot of room for negativity. Don’t be so hard on yourself. In changing your mindset, you change your life. You don’t have to be perfect and you don’t have to be everything all the time. Be present, accept what’s there, and work with it. Grow from everything and take what you can to the next experience. There will be much more abundance if you’re more accepting of what’s there.

  • When you’re mastering your mindset, you’re also attracting things that align with it. Think about the things you want in your life. They may not necessarily be the things you need, but all of that has a way of working itself out (more on that tomorrow). What determines the outcome is how you react to every new situation and how you choose to handle it. Some things may be more challenging than others, but thinking rationally and reminding yourself that you are in control, will make things easier.
