Why #DearBlackGirl? + The Only Detangler You'll Need

#DearBlackGirl is a celebration of kinky, coily, curly and curless natural hair. After all, with societal opposition to black hair and constant degradation from partners, media, the workplace, even family members, someone has to celebrate us, right? This one if for us, by us!
We’re taught from such a young age that the finer and silkier the hair the better--proximity to whiteness has been understood to be a trophy to achieve since childhood, an idea passed on from colonization. Growing up as a black girl you hear talk about “good hair” and big, bouncy curls and how precious these things are to have. Meanwhile, “nappy,” kinky textures are demonized and looked down upon, even from our own. These ideas were created and are perpetuated by those in power, by people who don’t look like us and can’t find beauty in our natural features. But the thing is, those notions simply aren’t true. Black hair--in all its textures, patterns, lengths and colors--is simply beautiful! No other people on earth have hair like us, and that alone is pretty amazing. The way we finesse our edges, create intricate and unique braided and twisted styles, and learn how to seamlessly go from a cute fro to a fluffy twist out to a laid wig (what lace?!) is pure art.
The natural hair movement has cultivated an incredible energy and has inspired black folks from all backgrounds and age groups to explore their roots, which is beautiful! In the midst of all of this celebration, though, lies an obvious and almost unconscious perpetuation of colorism and texturism, bias against dark skin and kinky hair textures. This is apparent in online communities and outside the web; lighter skin and looser textures often gain the most positive responses and their natural journeys are often well received. We’ve all seen it. The person with tight or indiscernible curls will be advised to ditch the “natural thing” because it’s “not for them,” because there’s one idea of what natural hair should look like. Or their hair is criticized, its very essence picked apart. But the movement is meant to uplift all natural textures, so my guys and gals with TWAs and waist length curls are celebrated alike. We’re in this together.
I know 4c hair is bomb, you know 4c hair is bomb, but sometimes outside opinions do have a negative impact. So with #DearBlackGirl, we honor you, kinky, coily, curly black girl. This series and this kit are dedicated to you! May you feel beautiful, powerful and invincible in who you are. Dear Black Girl, this is for you.

Ingredients

We love marshmallow root--so much so that we use it in quite a few of our hair masks because it makes the hair so wonderfully slippery. The marshmallow root plant is found in Africa. The root of the plant contains a slippery substance known as mucilage, a gelatinous or mucus-like secretion that actually has some pretty awesome benefits for the hair. It binds to the proteins in the hair to make the hair look thicker. CAIRO’s main purpose is to act as a hair detangler. We know how difficult it can be to detangle kinky-curly hair, and that's what makes CAIRO such an integral part of the #DBG hair kit. Marshmallow root adds some major slip to the hair, making it easy to detangle thick, curly hair, without breakage.

Okra is another super important detangling ingredient in CAIRO. It’s always the things you least expect that actually have a huge impact on our skin and hair health -- and okra is one of those things! It’s packed with vitamins A, C, and K, and minerals like magnesium and folate. Okra also produces mucilage, making it another slippery component to this detangler. It's a great frizz fighter and helps smooth out the hair cuticle. It’s also a hair moisturizer and will work to keep the hair nice and soft. We use it in our detangler because the mucilage it produces helps remove knots and tangles.

Slippery Elm is yet another slippery ingredient in CAIRO. Notice a trend here? Since 4C hair is so prone to dryness and tangles, it was super important for us to create a detangler that could gently, yet affectively work through any and all tangles. This tree bark also produces mucilage which adds a ton of slip to the hair. Slippery elm has been used for centuries for its medicinal properties and its ability to help cure ailments like sore throat and cough. Slippery elm has a ton of calcium to help keep the hair strong. It's also full of amino acids which help build up hair proteins. It helps moisturize dry, brittle hair (often a caveat of 4C hair), while also promoting shinier hair. We added it to CAIRO because of its ability to add slip and prevent the hair from any further breakage!

Olive leaf is yet another part of the olive plant that packs a ton of benefits for our skin and hair. We added it to CAIRO because we know how great it is for the scalp and follicles. And as we’ve learned, happy scalp = happy hair. Olive is rich in vitamins A and E which help protect the keratin in the hair. It’s also great for reducing frizz and keeping moisture locked into the hair shaft. We added it to CAIRO because olive does an amazing job of preventing any further dryness in (oftentimes) dry 4C hair.

Dandelion root is yet another dry hair savior. It’s packed with a ton of hair healthy vitamins and minerals like vitamin A, C, and E, as well as iron, magnesium, potassium, and biotin. All of which work together to keep the hair super strong and healthy. Dandelion root is also great for stimulating hair growth. We added it to CAIRO because of its ability to treat dry hair, while also being able to balance an overly oily scalp!

Moringa leaves is not only an amazing natural hair cleanser, it also helps prevent further hair damage. Moringa has a ton of amino acids that are essential for the hair. They help aid in hair growth and keeping the strands strong and healthy. It also has a lot of vitamins C and E, which help fight free radicals that can damage the hair. The omega 3s in moringa also help nourish the hair. These fatty acids help rebuild the hair from the root and make it stronger through the ends.

Shikakai is a shrub native to Asia and it has some pretty awesome benefits for our hair. It's been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries because of its ability to treat diseases. We added it to CAIRO because we love how gentle it is on the hair. Shikakai naturally has a lower pH, so it won't strip the hair of its necessary oils. We love how well it softens and cleanses the hair without over drying it. It’s also a pretty amazing detangler. Shikakai is a major part of CAIRO because it also adds shine and helps promote hair growth!

Flaxseed is yet another super slippery ingredient that makes CAIRO so great. Flaxseed, like marshmallow root, slippery elm, and okra, flaxseed produces mucilage that adds slip to the hair, making it super easy to detangle the hair. It's also rich in omega 3 fatty acids, which help promote hair growth and reduce damage from free radicals. Flaxseed also helps condition the hair to keep it soft and manageable.

Apple cider vinegar is one of those ingredients that seems like a no brainer in a product like this. It has so many benefits for our bodies, skin, and hair, we just had to add it to CAIRO. We love it because it's so great for balancing out the pH of our skin, including our scalps. It helps keep the scalp happy and healthy, which results in happier and healthier hair. It's also detoxifying for the scalp, and helps get rid of any excess sebum that could be weighing the hair down. Apple cider vinegar also helps repair split ends and adds shine!

Rose buds act as a natural conditioner in CAIRO. They help clean the hair and scalp without stripping. They have a ton of vitamins C, which is a great source of antioxidants, something our hair could always use more of to prevent damage. We love rose buds because they help reduce inflammation on the scalp and reduce dandruff. They also help stimulate hair growth.

Green mango is a smaller, more compact version of your typical mango. In general, mangos are great for our bodies. They have a ton of vitamins A and E, two of the best vitamins for promoting hair growth. As far as benefits for our hair, we added green mango to CAIRO because it makes the hair super manageable. It helps decrease frizziness and enhances natural shine. Overall, it helps makes the hair super soft, shiny, and easy to work with.

Avocado fruit is jam packed with essential fatty acids for our hair. It helps keep the hair strong and healthy from root to tip. Avocado is deeply moisturizing, which is why we've added it to a bunch of our other hair and skin products. It helps renourish dry, brittle hair, and it also eases frizziness. We added it to CAIRO because we know that sometimes, 4C hair can have a much high porosity, making it harder for the hair to retain moisture. Avocado helps support high porosity hair by keeping it soft and hydrated.

CAIRO is just the beginning of our #DearBlackGirl hair kit. We’ve made sure to cover all the bases in terms of what your kinky-curly hair needs.
