Email #9 - Low Porosity Protein Warning
For low porosities, protein week is too important to mess around.
WHEN IT'S PROTEIN WEEK
Please read the wash day instructions in the lesson in full.
However, we are pulling out the most important updates to your step by step regimen for wash day here as we also want to make 100% sure you didn't miss it.
- Don't take shortcuts!
This is a tried and tested regimen. You have to find the best process for you, but make sure you're being attentive to detail. In the end your attention to detail will be the difference between excellent results and good results.
- LOW POROSITY DO NOT CLARIFY THIS WEEK
For low/combination/medium porosity hair when you are doing a protein treatment wait 2 weeks to clarify. You are going to need the next couple of weeks to build the moisture back up into your hair.
- Your hair may feel different!
Now keep in mind, this week your hair is going to feel a bit strong, maybe a little clean, slightly hard. All of those are signs of a strengthening treatment. After this week you will go five more weeks with just moisture treatments, thus returning balance to your hair.
- Use a fresh ingredient!
For low porosity on weeks that you use the protein treatment blends fresh ingredient is recommended, you are going to need all of the moisture you can get. Banana + Avocado tends to be the most moisturizing of all of the ingredients.
- Do not try anything brand new this week!
This is the week where you want to KISS ( Keep. It. Simple. Stupid). Don't mix in all the powders and fresh ingredients and conditioners you never tried before or never tried together before. This is the week where you HAVE to use what is the most MOISTURIZING mix in ingredients and products you have.
- Watch out for Aloe Vera
Unless your hair already loves aloe vera skip it this week!
- You are not mixing all of your strengthening deep conditioners together.
Choose one! It's Henna OR Fenugreek Hair Mask. Some of you have both at home. Do not play mad scientist.
- Beware of hidden proteins
Proteins are a substance consisting of amino acids, hydrogen and more – it can be found in the human body (our hair is made of a form of protein called keratin), food and many other things. Proteins come in different forms and it can be hard to tell when there’s a hidden protein in a product. As you know, we recommend a protein treatment every 4-6 weeks for low porosity hair, and no more than twice a month for high porosity hair, so being mindful of the protein in your overall regimen is a key to helping us retain the growth we want. Keep an eye out for these hidden ingredients in products as they are all various forms of protein:
- Hydrolyzed wheat protein
- Hydrolyzed oat flour
- Variations of hydrolyzed soy protein
- Hydrolyzed silk protein
- Variations of hydrolyzed collagen
THIS IS THE WEEK WHERE YOU CAN GET A SET BACK AND GO INTO PROTEIN OVERLOAD IF YOU ARE NOT SUPER INTENTIONAL ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE USING ON YOUR HAIR.
This is very important. No items with protein at all this week.
- YOUR HAIR MAY FEEL DRIER THIS WEEK, SO YOU MAY NEED TO STEP YOUR NIGHTTIME MOISTURE REGIMEN UP.
If you normally do every other night, you may need to do it every night this week. If you normally do every three nights you may need to do every other night this week. Make the judgment call based on how dry your hair is feeling. A little dryness at first is expected but after a couple of days of moisturizing, you hair should start to feel balanced again.
Moisturizing and sealing should happen every other night or every three days. Start off with every other night the first week and if you feel your hair has product build-up, scale back to every three nights. Follow the directions below depending on your plan for moisture.
- ONLY USE GREEN TEA ONCE ON WASH DAY!
THIS WEEK OUR LOW POROSITY HAIR IS GOING TO BE VERY STRONG FROM THE PROTEIN TREATMENT. THE REST OF THE WEEK USE DISTILLED WATER, ALOE VERA JUICE, ROSEWATER ETC...
- LOW MANIPULATIONS STYLES ONLY
Your hair is going to be in a fragile state while you rebalance it. This is not the week to constantly touch your hair, which will encourage breakage. You want to leave it alone as much as possible besides your nighttime moisture routine. Braids or twists are recommended this week. Either flat against your head, or pinned up or pulled back. Do not unravel them to remoisturize at night, just squeeze the product into the braid or twist.
